[time-nuts] Happy New Year 2008!

I join in the wishes for a happy new year, marked only by the rolling
over of all the digits in an arbitrary year counter.

There is no reason to believe that it will be any better that it was
a few days ago. The forces of religious fundamentalism, of whatever
adopted creed, and financial greed will continue to degrade our quality
of life - because they can. Large accumulations of wealth will continue
to buy politicians with more charisma than common sense. These
politicians
will cater to the very wealthy because they are addicted to the seeming
power of government, and need money to stay in office.

Maybe this is partly because technology has advanced beyond the era
of "The Boy Electrician" and the ability to rebuild an automobile engine
with a few simple tools. Specialists have become so specialized that the
people who don't get to college have nothing going for them other than
following some leader who is innocent of the real ways of the world.

Meanwhile, we pursue precision time with an enthusiasm that 80+% of
the world's population finds only in following the one true religion.

It's all due to evolution, of course, but that is also a specialty.

We'll be asleep when the digits roll over, and ready to pursue time in
its flight tomorrow.

Hope I'm wrong . . .

Bill Hawkins
