Quite simply - if you either execute ldattach pps /dev/ttyUSBx, or are running GPSD (recommended) it will bind the USB appropriately to a ppsapi instance.
Do not do it. You will not approve of the results.

I've looked, really I have but to no avail.
I see that the code has been in the driver circa Linux 2.6 but I'm just not
making the "connection".
