Thanks all for the feedback and information, it's been very helpful and much appreciated.
I've been back tracking through a looooong accumulation of "rainy day" projects, and this is obviously one of those that's been neglected for far too long.
Something else that's fast becoming obvious though is that even here, splashing about in this windy wet patch of the universe also known as the west coast of Scotland, there just ain't ever gonna be enough rainy days to go round:-)
