Happens, but not often.


I have made some phase noise measurements of 5 MHz MTI-260 from

Lucent units. Funny, that the best one (dark blue) has a small 230V-to-12V

switcher (€12) and a 1000uF as power supply.   Meanwell IRM20-5.

That seems not to have a large impact. But it has a push-pull common base

amplifier on the output, that may help.

The others have a R&S NTG-20 supply and a shielded Box with extra filter.


The indicated reference power seems to be smaller than it really is.

My R&S URV-35/Z51 thermal power meter says 17 dBm for both

Morion MV89 references + amplifier.

Maybe it's time for new attenuators in the timepod.

It would be most interesting if someone else has measured that, too.


The MTI-260 data sheet does not say a lot. It could be SC or AT

or whatever. There are no data sheets of the units you can actually

buy on ebay.
