Also, don't forget about ventilation if you will be entering the underground space.
This sort of thing is classed as a 'confined space' and there should be oxygen monitoring in place while inside to prevent asphyxiation.
Ventilation may work against the thermal isolation goals, but it's better than being found laying at the bottom of a pit..
