don't worry,  I think everyone of us made the same path of experience in metrology, as you did.
( I can tell for myself..)

The 5500A also has stable AC ranges, and can also be measured in the same manner as DC by the 3458A, in the most precise Synchronous Sub-sampled Mode (SEtACV SYNC).
Could be sufficient, but I don't know the spec requirements for the Keithley 2000, especially at high freq.

You can get even higher accuracies down to a few ppm with the 3458A at low frequencies by using Swerleins Algorithm, available on the agilent site.

Instead of HP3458A + 5500A, perhaps you can lease the 5720A.
