You can trickle charge NiMH cells at low rates.  A battery manufacturer (can't remember which one) FAE said that a C/40 rate would be no problem at all.  C/20 is most likely OK.   10 ma into a 1600 mAh pack should be no problem at all...  unless it is too low a rate.  Very low charge rates can have problems of their own.   

Also,  I always use low-self-discharge NiMH cells.  No more of that dead battery in a month stuff....  more like dead battery in over a year.

It's OK to trickle charge Ni-Cad but it's a no-no to trickle charge Ni-MH.
