Just walked into the shop and the meter was on all day with the input 
shorted via my 'home made' test lead set.  It was incredibly stable sitting 
at about 1.5 uV +/- about 0.05 uV.

Perhaps leaving it on for the duration is having a beneficial effect at 
driving out moisture or other contaminants.

Now the question is whether or not it would remain stable after turning it 
off for a week or two then turning it back on.
