Fluke 8506A looking

T

Hi,

I am looking for a Fluke 8506A. I bought one on ebay but it came without the AC / DC thermal converter and it didn't even work in DC.

I kept it for spare parts but now I want one cheap.

If you have one or you know where I can go, thank you.

My Agilent 34401 has quite disappointed me because in ACV it is a disaster in both low-level accuracy and frequency response. My Fluke 8502 with the thrue rms converter in comparison is very flat 10Hz - 50kHz and over. The HP when measuring 12V for example becomes a 5 1/2 digit while the Fluke remains 6 1/2 digit. So my question is: considering AC DC accuracy and stability what are the best 6.5 digits multimeters?

have a nice day,

Luciano

Thanks to all those who have also answered me directly.(spade Lugs)

At a flea market I bought two references, one for voltage and other for current, Digistand 6406 and 6426 respectively. I wrote to the manufacturer for the manuals and he sent me the one for 6426 but he told me that he did not find the one that interested me most , ie voltage reference 6406. I repaired both power supplies that had shorted electrolytic capacitors and for one of them I had to replace the custom power transformer.

Now they both work but the voltage calibrator needs to be calibrated. Inside are a handful of trimmers but no indication of their function. Calibration is not possible without manual. Extreme ratio I want to ask you if any of you have this manual.

Thank you,

Luciano

EDL also makes some you can order online. You can get just copper or gold
plated over copper.

Another source is the Audiophile world. But that is more hit or miss on actual quality.

Hmm. Actually modifying one of my meters to include an internal calibration range and colour changing
backlight so that there is visual indication of range switching.

One big reason why cheap meters suck is that they can drift with battery voltage, ambient temperature
and how many times you've used them thanks to cheap PCBs which are often aluminium plated with copper.

I'll ask around in case someone here has one.

Hmm. Actually modifying one of my meters to include an internal calibration range and colour changing backlight so that there is visual indication of range switching. One big reason why cheap meters suck is that they can drift with battery voltage, ambient temperature and how many times you've used them thanks to cheap PCBs which are often aluminium plated with copper. I'll ask around in case someone here has one. -Andre ________________________________________ From: volt-nuts <volt-nuts-bounces@lists.febo.com> on behalf of timeok@timeok.it <timeok@timeok.it> Sent: 01 September 2020 12:45 To: volt-nuts@lists.febo.com Subject: [volt-nuts] Fluke 8506A looking Hi, I am looking for a Fluke 8506A. Hi Luciano
Try the Metrology thread on the EEVBLOG forum. There were some available
sometime ago. Post a request and you might get lucky.

EDL also makes some you can order online. You can get just copper or

gold
plated over copper.

Hi Luciano;
I have found a great source. They of copper as well as direct

gold-plated copper. A small company JW Solutions. They manufacture spade

At a flea market I bought two references, one for voltage and other

for current, Digistand 6406 and 6426 respectively. I wrote to the
manufacturer for the manuals and he sent me the one for 6426 but he told me
that he did not find the one that interested me most , ie voltage reference
6406. I repaired both power supplies that had shorted electrolytic
capacitors and for one of them I had to replace the custom power
transformer.

Now they both work but the voltage calibrator needs to be calibrated.

Inside are a handful of trimmers but no indication of their function.
Calibration is not possible without manual. Extreme ratio I want to ask you
if any of you have this manual.

Thank you,

Luciano

in 2016, quarks from the EEVBlog forum has offered exactly those two

models.
Perhaps he can help you with a manual.

Hi Luciano,
This reply is general in nature as there may be others interested. I have
two late generation HP 3455As and three HP 3456As that are in excellent
physical condition, always used in a lab environment and stored in the lab
storeroom for the last decade, never in the hands of a reseller. They all
currently work and measure surprisingly accurate even after being stored. I
have been procrastinating about reconditioning all of them electrically and
calibrating them for resale. Some of the hesitation on doing a complete
restore job (all new electrolytic, contact cleaning, line filter, fan,
etc...) like I have done on several 3458As is the relative low selling price
even after a restore job. Either model will tromp the HP 34401A other than
calibration effort/time and the 3455A is known to be outstanding in AC
measurements (not a TC though). When still in use, they were on 24/7 for
many years and all have EXCELLENT stabilized voltage references and will
return to that stability after a few months of operation. I have already
started a burn-in on all units prior to calibration. They have been on for
3-weeks now, all working. The considered rebuild job is primarily for
reassurance the instrument will perform well for many more years.

My hesitancy to rebuild also considers that maybe the buyer would rather do
it himself after buying the unit at a lower price. I'm retired now and my
time is a labor of love for these instruments and I can put the time into
them that I know can never be recovered. The parts, on the other hand, I do
need to recover and that will add about $120 US per unit.

The going price on eBay for either model seems to be $150 - $300 for working
units. I would like to get the higher end of that for mine working and
calibrated but no rebuild. Just something for you to consider. Will answer
all questions.

Subject: [volt-nuts] Fluke 8506A looking

Hi,

I am looking for a Fluke 8506A. I bought one on ebay but it came without
the AC / DC thermal converter and it didn't even work in DC.

I kept it for spare parts but now I want one cheap.

If you have one or you know where I can go, thank you.

My Agilent 34401 has quite disappointed me because in ACV it is a
disaster in both low-level accuracy and frequency response. My Fluke 8502
with the thrue rms converter in comparison is very flat 10Hz - 50kHz and
over. The HP when measuring 12V for example becomes a 5 1/2 digit while the
Fluke remains 6 1/2 digit. So my question is: considering AC DC accuracy and
stability what are the best 6.5 digits multimeters?

have a nice day,

Luciano

Thanks to all those who have also answered me directly.(spade Lugs)

At a flea market I bought two references, one for voltage and other for
current, Digistand 6406 and 6426 respectively. I wrote to the manufacturer
for the manuals and he sent me the one for 6426 but he told me that he did
not find the one that interested me most , ie voltage reference 6406. I
repaired both power supplies that had shorted electrolytic capacitors and
for one of them I had to replace the custom power transformer.

Now they both work but the voltage calibrator needs to be calibrated.
Inside are a handful of trimmers but no indication of their function.
Calibration is not possible without manual. Extreme ratio I want to ask you
if any of you have this manual.

Thank you,

Luciano

Hi Luciano
Try the Metrology thread on the EEVBLOG forum. There were some available
sometime ago. Post a request and you might get lucky.

EDL also makes some you can order online. You can get just copper or gold
plated over copper.

Hi Luciano, This reply is general in nature as there may be others interested. I have two late generation HP 3455As and three HP 3456As that are in excellent physical condition, always used in a lab environment and stored in the lab storeroom for the last decade, never in the hands of a reseller. They all currently work and measure surprisingly accurate even after being stored. I have been procrastinating about reconditioning all of them electrically and calibrating them for resale. Some of the hesitation on doing a complete restore job (all new electrolytic, contact cleaning, line filter, fan, etc...) like I have done on several 3458As is the relative low selling price even after a restore job. Either model will tromp the HP 34401A other than calibration effort/time and the 3455A is known to be outstanding in AC measurements (not a TC though). When still in use, they were on 24/7 for many years and all have EXCELLENT stabilized voltage references and will return to that stability after a few months of operation. I have already started a burn-in on all units prior to calibration. They have been on for 3-weeks now, all working. The considered rebuild job is primarily for reassurance the instrument will perform well for many more years. My hesitancy to rebuild also considers that maybe the buyer would rather do it himself after buying the unit at a lower price. I'm retired now and my time is a labor of love for these instruments and I can put the time into them that I know can never be recovered. The parts, on the other hand, I do need to recover and that will add about $120 US per unit. The going price on eBay for either model seems to be $150 - $300 for working units. I would like to get the higher end of that for mine working and calibrated but no rebuild. Just something for you to consider. Will answer all questions. So my question is: considering AC DC accuracy and stability what are the best 6.5 digits multimeters? have a nice day, Luciano Luciano P. S.
