The tunnels would most probably be round, so there's the hint. Theoretically
you could use tunnels as waveguides but these would be loaded differently and
create phase differances. The tunnels are never THAT straight so they will
have differnt lengths. Stuff like that.

This is certainly a problem which is best solved by means of cable-bound
signals.
