The Dava Sobel book mentioned elsewhere also seems to
have been released in an illustrated edition including period
documents and equipment photographs:

"The Illustrated Longitude", Sobel & Andrewes,
1998 hardcover, 2003 paperback

( I don't own that edition, but shall add it to the wish list )

Also, Chapter 14 of "The Art and Science of Analog Circuit Design",
Williams (ed), 1995, titled 'John Harrison's "Ticking Box" ', summarizes
his efforts towards the Longitude Prize.
