I have good experience from using Tektronix AP007, which is using VXI11.
VXI11 is based on good old RPC which took me about half a day from searching
VXI11 to actually control the instrument. The VXI11 spec is there for free and
the necessary RPC definitions is in there as an appendix, so just hacking that
down and run RPCGEN gets you fairly quickly on your feets. It was not too hard
to figure out how to use the commands from the VXI11 spec so it was no major
magic involved. The next day I could almost totally concentrate on my critical
measurement application. All this on a fairly standard Linux machine.

So, if you got a VXI11 jobbie, I think it is an easy piece to work with.
Hmm. I wish I had a few here at home. Would solve problems.

I toyed around some in an attempt to write a VXI11 library, but as many
projects attention went out over to other things.
