Perhaps the real confusion is between the actual definition of the Allan
variance etc, and the various estimators of the Allan variance etc.

The so called classical Allan variance is nothing more than an estimator
of the Allan variance.
The so called overlapped Allan variance is a better (more accurate)
estimator of the Allan variance.
