I would welcome a Linux port. For serial I/O just look up the POSIX 
serial I/O interface. It's not that magic. For GUI, I would consider 
using GTK. Using the GLADE GUI-designer and libglade cuts alot of code 
off the list. That would also work for OSX and Windows if you like.
