Oooh.  Clepsydra  (is that also the plural?).. one of my favorite topics..

It never occurred to me that they might couple, although almost every
other mechanical clock does.

What would the mechanism be?
How could one set up an experiment?

(hey, it's getting to be summertime, and my kids need projects that 
might get them wet)
