Rob you are correct but the 10 MC is a ref for the pll.
Luciano goes into more detail on the diode mixer/doubler and this makes
sense. It would be simple, but would not be very sensitive. So by feeding
the converter as he has with a modern antenna he gains a lot and most likely
a lower frontend noise floor.
