Indeed. I meant DMTD.

The oldest DMTD setup I know is from the NASA special conference on 
short term stability in 1962, See NASA Special Publication 80 (SP80).
It's linked at the Wikipedia article on Allan deviation.

DMTD comes in many shapes.
