Look into the TI Lauchpad.  It is about the same idea as Arduino but
they start at $4.30 (shipped) and the larger ARM based one is still
under $18.   I'm sure TI loses money on each one they sell

Those little 2x16 LCD displays are easy to use but you can make them
much nicer by adding a rotary shaft encoder to make it work like a
"scroll knob".  It is a very intuitive control for a user and easy to
program. Then you can have things like satelite info and so on, untill
your controller runs out of RAM
