These seem really well suited for the job:

NPN:  ZXTN07012EFFTA    Beta forward = 1100, ultra-small Rbb, 12V 4.5A SOT23

PNP: ZXTP070012EFFTA   both from Diodes, Inc.

The large beta allows a large R in the filter RC and thus reasonable 
capacitors.
