Why not design a circuit similar to the GPSDO approach utilizing the 1 pps 
to synchronize a 32.768 kHz oscillator which could be applied to the clock's 
divider input after it's internal oscillator has been disabled?  You could 
probably apply the signal directly to where the crystal used to reside. 
This would allow universal application to any cheap clock with an accessible 
crystal..
