The one possible problem is a blown front end. This will not fail the self test. Check the sellers "completed listings" and feedback to see what esle they have sold. If they are playing dumb on this one, but knowedgeable about other tech stuff you may have a problem. Personally I find a faulty item described faulty does much better on ebay than one "not known" or not shown switched on. A asle hate the people who put "tested and working" on high start price items that are obviously not from the photo (i.e. matched parts missing, obvious damage) or that from the description they haven't got a clue what it is. OK if you are starting at $10, not at $1000.

Turning on the HP5334A and just let it run through the startup self test among other things will leave it with dashes accross the display.

Having the knowledge, time, manual and will-power may be the aspects missing.
