Nick,
I use a Gilsson antenna too, mounted on a small upside-down aluminum pizza plate for ground plane (also earthed). To keep our eastern Ontario snow off it I put a medium sized plastic kitchen funnel (inverted) over the Gilsson, held in place by silicone seal. Plugged the small hole at top with more sealer. It is all supported on a wooden stick a few feet above the peak of the roof. Been there 3 years now with no trouble or sign of deterioration from UV etc. The bright blue funnel even keeps the birds away. I get similar signal levels as you do.
